Burton Hockey Club's Success Across The Board
28th May 2010,

Burton Hockey Club are celebrating success across the Board due to Burton's U 18 Boys Team who were the winners at the Leicester Westleigh Tournament recently.
They began confidently by winning all of their three pool games, beating Leicester Westleigh 1-0, Newark 2-0 and Harborough 4-0. This earned them a semi-final tie against a free scoring Loughborough Carillion side, who punished Burton’s sluggish start by taking a quickfire two goal lead inside the first five minutes! However, Burton recovered their composure and some slick attacking play enabled them to overturn the game, with Jake Kemp scoring twice and James Margetson once.

This took them to the final against Rutland HC, which proved to be the tightest game of the competition. Rutland initially had the majority of the possession and applied immense pressure on Burton. A determined defence held firm though and Burton were soon hitting their opponents on the counter-attack, creating several chances of their own. However, neither side could break the deadlock, resulting in penalty flicks to decide the winners. Danny Hibbert, James Margetson and Jake Kemp coolly converted their flicks which proved enough to win the competition, thanks to a couple of excellent saves by Burton goalkeeper Vikram Jones. Burton were worthy winners, having played with great team spirit and skill, led by captain Jamie Boast.

The U’10 girls and boys squads were both crowned Derbyshire champions, thanks to a win over Matlock by the girls team and three straight wins by the boys, who remarkably conceded no goals. The U’12 girls and boys squads reached the final in their respective competitions, both against strong Belper sides who were ultimately victorious. However, the Burton squads still qualified for the Midlands Championships as runners-up.

It was a fantastic performance by all the squads, particularly considering the limited number of fixtures they have been able to participate in this season due to the poor winter weather. ‘B’ squads also took part in each competition and all acquitted themselves very well and gained valuable experience for future events.

With Burton Hockey Club gaining the highly respected Clubmark accreditation this year and with several players achieving County success, Burton’s Academy have arguably enjoyed their most successful season to date. However, the Academy always welcomes new players and training will continue every Monday night until mid-May (not including bank holidays), with under 11’s training from 6:30-7:30pm and under 13’s training from 7:30pm-8:30pm. Anyone interested should contact Sarah Abel on 07881 606136 or Tony Collier on 07866 090760.
